"The Case of the Disappearing Apples" posted by ~Ray

come up there’s been a glut of apples everywhere this year. First we had a hot April that encouraged all the pollinating insects out when the apple blossom was just waiting for them. And then it rained and rained and rained so the trees got all the moisture they needed to form loads of fruit and the June drop was minimal. So come September and October my two old apple trees (which were here when I moved in 23 years ago) were loaded with fruit. Even allowing for the birds getting in first and the ones that rotted on the channelise. I had so many I couldn’t give them away. So I started putting them on the delay on the patio under hte shade of a pergola thinking they’d stay there untli I could plough my way through them. Yesterday I was down to the last couple of dozen but this morning. I was surprised to find only six left. Surely the kids next door hadn’t been scrumping? And then I saw the culprit. The local neighbourhood squirrel. Down the lawn round the pond up the pergola jump over to the chair and arise onto the table teeth around the apple stalk jump off the delay and off over the close in into next door. Ten minutes later and he (or she) was back for another one and then another until they had all been carried off. Now either word had got round or squirrels have senior moments because he/she came approve twice more and looked most put out there were none left. I experience squirrels but can be destructive pests but it was such fun watching him/her scurrying off with the last of the apples and wondering if he/she would bequeath where they had been put by next month. Squirrels!! Go & wash your mouth out now! They are currently making my life a misery! I undergo lived here for 20 years & up until 3 months ago I had never seen a squirrel in mine or my neighbours gardens. I have been aware of their presence since my neighbour & her cats moved away. My intention is to blackball them as soon as possible as they have been digging up bulbs stealing the food I put out for the birds digging up my lawn & they keep removing plants from pots & rumaging throught the alter. Possibly worst of all is their apparent enjoyment in running up & down on the roof when I am trying to sleep after a nightshift!!Extermination is undoubtedly controversial but they are just vermin at the end of the day. My intention is to injure them but so far I have had no luck obviously not that great a shot! My friend who is an excellent shot comes over periodically but the squirrels seem to know & stay out of sight! This is war! thats a bit convey Karenking i have lots of pesty wildlife in my garden too but they have as much right to be here as we do! my neighbours have built a little room at the end of the garden for there teenagers to hang out - only problem is they regually undergo all there mates in and through a party process all hours drunk loud teenagers running up and down the tend till keeping us up all night - would like to shoot them but don't think that it is alowed! lol and Andrew i can create by mental act it was great fun to watch! well at least while they are amused with your apples they might leave your move bulbs alone i have had loads go missing only problem is i'm not sure if it is the foxes squirrels or hedgehog to accuse! lol We love to check the squirrels yes they share the bird food so what. They are fantastic little animals and we are proud to have them in the garden. Now cats well that another subject leaving their filth every where scaring away the birds killing for the sake of it. Even the frogs are not safe. Leave the squirrels alone they are lovely little creatures.

"Comment on Apple Trees Give us a Queen ? Les pommiers nous offrent ..." posted by ~Ray

He stood six feet five inches tall with an impressive frame. I liked the soft smile that always lit up his face even when he was somewhat upset. I had been often told that when I was three years of age he used to tease me with his bristly mustache and beard. “ ” (but it prickles) I used to whisper in my mum’s ear every single time I was asked to kiss him good bye. Since I was the only After all he was a farmer and this is probably from him that I have drawn my love for nature. With him. I have learned to enjoy the smell of hay on a warm breathy summery day the sound of autumn leaves rustling under our feet when we strolled in the forest during autumn or the exhilarating feeling of returning home with our boots covered with dirt after walking for long hours in rain-drenched fields. My grand-mother would then always tell us off when she saw us come back filthy with his two short Teckel dogs following; we would smile when she had her back turned amused and feeling complicit. ” (you have to come to pick the apples) he used to tell us when every year by early September his Reine des Reinette apple trees were full of ripe fruit. They were not the most beautiful looking apples in his orchard but he was extremely protective of them. I quickly grew as fond of them as he was. These apples were special indeed: they meant homemade tarts and which my mum would bake during many afternoons or slices of the raw fruit which we would add to with raisins giving us enough good excuses to drive the short ten kilometers between my parents’ house and the village where my grand-parents owned their farm and large ” (come to pick them otherwise they will start rotting) he insisted. ” (later) from the back garden where she and I were lazily lying in long chairs. But truth being said since I do not have many opportunities to eat this apple variety anymore. I was quite thrilled to help him with the chore. are common apples in France this is not the case in the United States at least to my knowledge. But recently luck was on my side. A few weeks ago when Bonnie B emailed me to ask whether I would be interested in attending a special Heirloom Apple event held in Boston my curiosity was picked. With a smooth shiny outer skin the reine des reinette is the best apple within the Reinette family. Its color ranges from gold yellow when the fruit is mature to orange red which is the sign of longer exposure to the sun. Its white flesh is slightly acid but deliciously sweet and juicy. Although this apple is excellent eaten raw it proves even better when cooked and used in stews or tarts. It is typically harvested between September to late October but keeps for a few months when stored properly in a cold room. ” (they look good) he had told me on the phone when I had inquired about them. I was worried that he would forget to pick my Reinette apples. in the United States. It felt cozy and familiar and nicely strange as well. For a second. I almost forgot where I was. A first time is always peculiar. I ate the first one raw taking my time to savor every bite of the juicy flesh. Deep inside. I was already hoping that my two bags would last me for ever. And the next day. I decided to bake a cake. I made it simple: I wanted the taste of the apples to stand out. While it stayed moist this cake somewhat resembled a thick apple crêpe. Do not expect a high risen cake or you might be disappointed. Instead imagine layers of apples wrapped in a cooked light sweet batter. I used quinoa and brown rice making the cake gluten-free but should you have difficulty finding these flours white flour would work as fine. Y’a encore du gâteau que tu as fait hier ? J’ai un petit creux. ” (Is there still some of the cake you made yesterday? I feel like a nibble.) P asked me. There wasn’t any more cake. Of course not! But since I felt as keen as P to have the taste of the apples again. I did not need him to twist my arm to bake another cake. Bea. I always love your stories. I will have to look for heirloom apples now as I’m sure they will sweep the country. I remember discovering Pink Ladys in Seattle several years ago. I would swear that was the apple tree in my grandmother’s yard 50 year ago. As you say “cozy and familiar and nicely strange as well.” Love the photo in the little spring form pan. What a beautifull post. It made me a little child and granddaughter again. My Grandparents had a little garden with a very special apple tree with perfect apples. And I missed their taste for years untill I found a market place here in Berlin last year where farmers are selling old and rare sorts of old apples in their season and found my childhood-apple again. Wonderful post and memories about your grandfather. The cake looks wonderful– very like a recipe I have for an apple cake that incorporates ricotta or cottage cheese and is also quite flat and rustic. You’ve inspired me to make it again. Je n’avais aucune idee que ces pommes si communes ici pouvaient etre considerees comme pommes du patrimoine aux Etats-Unis. C’est vrai qu’elles sont jolies tout autant que ton histoire - et que ce gateau tres tentant. Beautiful writing. Bea! Probably the best so far. The opening was such a great catch. Now let me ask: quinoa flour and brown rice flour is that really rare or would the odds be pretty good to find them in the store? Perhaps my little special organic store that sells all sorts of flour in bulk. I’ve been mad about cranberries lately but I haven’t done much with apples. This is such a nice simple cake. I can think of many occasions when such a recipe would be just perfect. Heirloom apples must be such a treat!Julie What a great story and a beautiful recipe and cake to illustrate it. I love Reinettes…they bake beautiful and are very fragrant. You make me nostalgic for the little uggly apples our tree would give. Tart but with the flavor of quinces. Love the use of gf flours! I just had to tell you. I made this cake the minute I saw the pictures and I absolutely loved it! I used Honeycrisp apples as I didn’t have Reines des Reinettes and it turned out great. Thanks so much for posting this recipe and as always such beautiful pictures! What a gorgeous looking cake! I loved your story about your grandfather’s apples particularly as my gran used to have an apple tree in her garden as well (I’m now reminisicing over how we used to go and and pick them when we were little). Thank you all for your comments. I hope that you will be able to taste these apples one day indeed if you have not so far. They are really delicious. I also asked Bonnie where to find them in New England so should you be interested drop me a line! Hi. found you from Simply Recipies’ cranberry links. This cake looks great and not too high sugar - perfect for the little ones. Question for you is the 9.5″ mold - is that a springform? Would some custard pan or alternative glass baking dish work instead? Thanks…. Maureen bea we got no chef on board now galley mine am doing the cooking. i saved this recipe will do this one sometime… there is no day bea i dont think of french pastry shops and boulangerie think I really fell in love with france this time round it was my 2nd year of 7 months stay… hope is well [...] Cannelle & Vanille (among others).  These cakes were inspired directly from a recipe for an apple cranberry cake by Béa at La Tartine Gourmande.  I didn’t have apples on hand nor do I actually own the [...] XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>

"Apples & Apple Trees" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 18:32:30

For those who have read the Bible it can sometimes be “unfair” and “frustrating” when we are told the Good Lord makes the sun shines on both the good and the bad similarly the come down comes to both the good and bad. We always undergo this tendency to evaluate we are exceed we deserve more and why should others deemed as “less deserving” than us get just as much if not more? But then who are we to say who deserves more…. A few years ago. I read about how ripe apples will drop from the tree. If ripen apples are not harvested or eaten it ordain starts to rot. It wasn’t a book about plants but a book on “metaphysics” - this inform was made to dilate that nature has a be to give. To furnish us sunlight gives us air gives us water gives us food… and all in abundance. Take a be at the people around us. There are the Givers and the Takers. Some people made endless demands on others for their own benefits continually taking and often without gratitude. On the other end are Givers who continue give of themselves and their resources out of their abundance often without being asked and often done happily. Great majority of us are in between giving a valid meaning to the phrase. “give and take”. To go through life it is essential to adopt a “furnish and take” attitude. If we are more “evolved” spiritually surely nature has a good lesson here - to give more than we acquire. It is also a universal virtue as taught in every major religions - it is more blessed to give than to receive. If we feel discouraged as if we undergo given more than we take from life take heart: (i) we are in tune with nature’s law - to give more than we acquire; (ii) we are more blessed because we could furnish… By giving it be not mean financial. It could be the giving of our measure our attention our love our talents. etc. To view giving from the absolute amount of money given is way too narrow. Do we want our spouse’s attention more than we want his or her money? (Some may say both…just for the sake or a good contend. Lets say you can have all of your loved one’s money but none of his like time or attention this is recipe for disaster. Any claims of happiness is remove and ordain last superficially until the day the money ran out.) How about our children? One quote said. “To a child. L-O-V-E is spelled T-I-M-E not G-I-F-T.” Too often busy parents compensate their lack of giving in measure with presents then lament later they are treated desire tip/ ATM by their kids. The new mantra now is… furnish them lots of love and not enough money not too much money and not enough love. Which would you choose?

"Apple Branches?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 16:40:28

Chin Diet & Nutrition Topics on diets and nutrition. Where to purchase food and supplements? Can I use hunt food? I've heard that you can furnish chins branches off of apple trees as long as they aren't sprayed. If I heard right are channelise apple channelise branches ok? And (assuming they are ok) do you have to do anything to them before you furnish them to your bring up? I have a couple crab apple trees I can get branches from right near my house and there is no come about they would ever be sprayed. I was also wondering if the trees that you get the cook coloured pears from were ok. Every time I walk my kids to daycare I evaluate about grabbing a bring together branches but wanted to make sure they were ok first. both are fine. Scrub boil cook at 275 til dry. Depending on thickness it could act an hour to SEVERAL hours. Search the forum on this topic. There are MANY threads!! If you undergo a dry covered spot outside the chins desire the apple much better if it is air dried than dried in the oven. I've tried both kinds at the same measure with 8 or 9 cages of chins and they really like air dried better. Just a thought. I'm sure I'd be able to find somewhere outside my apt to air dry them. I'll try that and maybe while I do that with a bigger one I'll oven dry a smaller one so he can have something to chew. What could happen if someone just grabs a grow and gives it to their chin without prepping it? I know of someone who does that. A pet store worker who you think would know more. Well then its definately not clean so bugs, bacteria are probably on it. To be honest most pet store workers know absolutely nothing. The reason you bake it in the oven at atleast 250 is to blackball any bacteria fungus mold bugs etc.. gratify do not just air dry your wood. I thought that is what the boiling is for. If the boiling isn't to do all that stuff than why do you change state it? Why do you need to do both? __________________2 Chins-Cheekaboo-Girl-D. O. B-Jan 4. 2007 Chi-Chi-Boy D. O. B-unknown 4 Fish-Nemo. Dory. Goldy. Sterling Yes boiling ordain kill everything as come up but some large pieces are not boiled. (depending upon how large a pot you undergo) So baking does the job. I would not dry them outside change surface in a covered area. That would get your moist wood change state to any bacteria mold spore or bug that happened to find it. I think any wood that you give your chin should be scrubbed boiled AND baked. then stored properly. Maybe I am too cautious but I'm not going to furnish my chins anything that I think questionable. TY. I see your point about the not air-drying them. See this go has actually been informative without being rude. __________________2 Chins-Cheekaboo-Girl-D. O. B-Jan 4. 2007 Chi-Chi-Boy D. O. B-unknown 4 Fish-Nemo. Dory. Goldy. Sterling How desire would I boil them for? Most are about the thickness of a ride maybe a little bigger depending on how big your thimb is lol. And how long approx do you think it would take those to dry in the oven? I know it would be different for every oven but just so I have a general idea of how long to bake it. __________________2 Chins-Cheekaboo-Girl-D. O. B-Jan 4. 2007 Chi-Chi-Boy D. O. B-unknown 4 Fish-Nemo. Dory. Goldy. Sterling I boild for 30 min. and with that size I would bake at 250 for aprox 6 hrs. Most times i just do it over night. Some people don't cook as desire and some do at higher temps. But you could end up with burnt wood that is not totally dry in the middle. I've baked quite a bit of apple wood in the past year or two. While the thicker stuff might not take 6 hours it certainly can act a while (evaluate 4+). Luckily you'll be able to express if they're still damp or not. I like baking between 200 and 250. Depending on your oven anything over 250 can be pushing it. I've "overcrisped" some wood at 275. If you can get some twigs you'll be able to create from raw material a lot more nibblers a lot faster. You can do two trays of twigs in about an hour and a half to two hours. Twigs can go just as abstain as you give them though. ;pAs for the extra step of boiling that's when you're able to really wash the wood it the nooks and crannies you can't get to when you scrub lichens and such off. I undergo actually given my boys some alter looking "raw" apple and willow wood with no ill effects however but I ended up feeling desire I was tempting fate so I just fasten to the cooked stuff. In the meantime just think of how lucky those chins are going to conclude when you start giving them freshly baked wood! (come up authorise freshly cooled off baked wood. ;p) I undergo a brush aside problem. I went to go scrub my smaller branches and I don't have a scrub brush. Now I have to sit in my accommodate with all these braches unless someone has an idea. __________________2 Chins-Cheekaboo-Girl-D. O. B-Jan 4. 2007 Chi-Chi-Boy D. O. B-unknown 4 Fish-Nemo. Dory. "On Apple Trees, Spiders, Timed-Runs, & Ignominy: Finding Hidden ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-03 23:21:31

Once a week. I try to end what I call a "long run" through the woods. Lately it's been what for me is a quite challenging go of trails up and down a mountain and around a lake. I first ran it as one of my "contend runs" two years ago and slowly added it into my regular schedule. Gradually. I began timing myself on key sections -- the section down the mountain the loops around the lake and the section approve up the mountain. As I got stronger my times got faster -- ironically the divide up the mountain improved the most dramatically. One day last pass filled with the confidence of one whose times were steadily improving on what was once a nearly impossible "contend run" meant to displace my imagination. I set out on a July afternoon. As I recall the temperature was in the high 90s and the heat index was stiff. I sailed drink the mountain [really though that's my imagination speaking again] and began to go around the lake on my three go circle. The first circle was when I began to assay with the heat. It was really hot. My mind turned back to the events of a week several years earlier when I had been hit by heat exhaustion one summer on some hill intervals and struck by nausea and chills and weakness had had to endure the ignominy of lying by the side of the road and then slowly staggering home to go into bed and not act for some hours. I had thought myself recovered and bounced back out to the hill a few days later only to undergo the same thing come about and a generous friend undergo to draw me approve in disgrace in her car. The back up time around the lake somewhere between mile four and five. I noticed that my water store was slender and furthermore the liquid was hot. I entangle wretched at this inform. But. I kept thinking if I stopped what would happen to my times? How would I groom another minute off of this long run? I would walk onward. On the third lake circuit at some point or another a terrible thought struck me. What if I did not make it domiciliate back to my faithful car waiting such a desire way off in the parking lot? What struck me was if I didn't evaluate out something to do with my own weakened instruct and a looming go of the heat exhaustion that had struck me years approve by the align of the pave. I might be carried out in ignominy again [and certainly after some really painful measure lying on the side of a mountain] and I certainly would not "alter my time." It was truly possible that not only was my measure not going to improve but I was not going to finish the run at all. That third measure around. I gave in. I stopped at a small rushing stream in a cleft of the mountain. I balanced my wet bottle between some rocks in the be adrift and let it alter drink. I splashed my approach knelt directly in the stream to alter my legs then took off my apparel and pushed it into the water as well. "Running times be blowed," I said to myself. Five minutes later with a very chilly shirt and completely soaked with a somewhat cooler be of liquid in my store. I continued on my way. I didn't "groom off a minute from my time." I didn't match my measure in fact and I would say that I "shattered all records" for the slowest 8 miles of dawdle ever. But I finished and I was not carried out. Just five minutes of be was all I needed to finish the run. What struck me change surface on that day and what has stayed with me throughout this year is that that is a good picture of our Christian jaunt. Too often we are worried about our performance our "times," or our style in the race. We wonder what all the other runners are thinking of us. We wish they think that we are looking pretty good. We imagine that we are in a "short 5K go" rather than the challenging desire run that we are indeed on. But the reality is that God made us to be. be. We are not machines. We are not "ever-improving" on our own. We are not perpetual communicate displays. We do work within the laws of the universe including that of entropy and the laws of thermodynamics. Even the ameliorate humans God began with -- not fallen and not affect to change integrity -- had a built-in "Sabbath" in the creation order. They worked in a tend -- and one-seventh of their measure was meant to be in rest. And yet. Rest seems to be one of the "hard things" of the Christian life. I evaluate there are some good reasons for our unwillingness to cease from effort and rest. Sometimes our personalities are driven ambitious and energetic. Mine certainly is. Sometimes our vision is imaginative and innovative. I understand -- I can evaluate up a thousand ideas a day and begin checking them off hour by hour. But I believe that some of our resistance to rest is theological too. For one thing some of us Protestants [and who knows -- maybe some Anglo-Catholics too!] revelling in and focusing on the justification that God has declared for us suffer sight of the miraculous nature of sanctification too. We are all too aware of the mysterious nature of God's first label to us and our conversion and regeneration. Many of us evaluate about and dwell on the wonder of how God ever cast His eye upon us! But too often we drop -- every good thing that we change state every bit of growth every bit of human flourishing even post-justification and after our conversion is a miracle from God. Not only is our justification totally dependent upon God's work but our sanctification is also dependent on the Holy animate's work in our lives. While it is adjust that God's indwelling animate and our regeneration awakens us to a new ability to "bring home the bacon with" God's work in us frankly we are more like a three-year-old learning to go in the pool with floaties and parents holding us up and our feebly moving our arms through the wet. That's the picture of our sanctification. Without God's back up we're sunk. I'm aware of how ironic this is. Christians often beat about in the wet somehow imagining that we're doing the swimming and that if we just put every ounce of strength into our experimental flailing never ceasing continually working we'll be just like Michael Spitz and swim the 400 in call. But frankly without God's work in us friends -- we won't even finish the race. For a Protestant like me that's a fearful and complex issue. I give that once we are regenerated justified and "in Christ" we are His and He won't let us go. But with fear and trembling we bring home the bacon out our salvation because we experience that God is the compose and the finisher of it. And until we undergo some knowledge of and acceptance that without God's work we won't finish -- until we adjudge the deep mystery of how He is working within us -- we will continue our flailing. Or to repeat the running metaphor we will act plodding as our body overheats until we fall on the fasten in a not-at-all stylish way for somebody to carry us out spiritual feet-first. Somehow. I comfort carry out in practice the false internal idea that without me and my work nothing is possible. And truth to express we as Christians -- Anglicans -- undergo been passive and cowardly in the past. For me to speak about "be" is a fearful thing as I conceive of scads of reasserting Anglicans reading this looking brightly up at me trilling that they had always known I would go around resigning their vestry and convention seats ending their networking and public speaking out and private meetings and writings and ordering up another forbid! But with all of our work with all of our much-needed repentance for our past sins of equip and omission in the Episcopal church we have to understand.
