Posted on 2008-01-16 01:30:43

If you only have a paper and pencil handy you can comfort play some great games including the challenging word game. Every player is given the same 25 letters in the same order and they compete to make the most of them. In a deck of cards is added but the concept is very much the same. Every player is given the same 25 cards in the same order and they compete to score the most points by making Poker hands both vertically and horizontally.

"Bloody Legacy - Can you be the sole surviving inheritor?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 19:49:52

Overview: is a card bet for 2-8 players ages 8 and up.. The quote on the box sums it up really well: "An unnecessarily violent and offensive card game for all the family". Players take on the role of relatives of Great-Uncle Sir Hesketh Goodbody Three-Choirs Overcoat (Deceased). Uncle Hesketh has recently died and left a fortune to his sole surviving relative. You have to make sure that the sole survivor is you!The game is rare in that the suggested playing time of 30 minutes is on the long align. Frequently four player games will end inside 15 minutes. That said this is a game you to play again immediately - so perhaps the half-hour suggestion is justified! (I was in my FLGS a while ago when a cusomer came in clearly upset. "I'm disgusted at the game you sold my son!" she screamed at the manager. It turned out that her 10 year old son had bought a write. Despite her upset at the artwork and theme she bought several copies as presents for her son's friends!)What you need to play:The Bloody Legacy deck - this has 52 cards Three "Life tokens" per player - yet another fine use for Euro-game cubes!A sense of gratify - Essential! The cards all depict humourously gruesome artwork titled in English and German. There are two types:Traps: You use these to try and injure or disadvantage other players. Tricks: These help you avoid traps which other players displace your way. Set-up:1) Each player is given three life-tokens.2) Determine the starting player - the game suggests holding a pie eating contest to end this! The starting player is given the be box to show their lay (I'm sure a kumquat would be a suitable alternative!)3) Each player is dealt three cards. Gameplay:The player with the deck box passes it to the left and plays a trap card against one of their opponents. If they have no traps they must pass instead. Once the trap has been dealt with (see below) play passes to the new holder of the deck box. If nobody has a trap card (very rare) then all the cards are shuffled and new hands are dealt. Any player targeted by a trap can use a trick card to try and avoid it. cozen cards will either negate the trap or move it to another player. If they don't compete a trick then they will either take damage or lose a card (depending on the trap). The confine remains in front of the player to show the amount of damage taken. Whenever a card of any type is played a replacement is drawn. The amount of damage varies from 1 to 5 points per card. As soon as a player has taken 5.

"Thread: Re: Your personal Top 10 Gateway Games" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 16:06:14

Several items from my list are repeated on others but here goes:10: Apples to Apples9: Memoir 448. Lost Cities [Just for you. Sam]7. No Thanks6. Blokus5. Settlers4. Carcassonne3. Alhambre [See below]2. Citadels1. TTRMost of these games (particularly TTR) undergo been commented on in the broadcast or elsewhere here. But I thought I'd furnish a few comments:--Ben: I noticed your list has a criteria that gateway games introduce players to mechanics or game systems that they can build on later (so Apples to Apples doesn't make your list). I think this is nice but not nearly as important as showing populate that playing games is a fun social and interactive activity and that there are more games out there than the ones we knew growing up (Monopoly. Sorry. Risk...) So. A2A made my list even though I'm not a big fan of the bet. I evaluate that the flexibility to accommodate varying numbers of players player ages and time constraints is far more important in an entry-level bet than the possibility of building for future games. Let's face it there are lots of people that probably won't compete more "advanced" games than the ones on our lists--and that's OK.--I'm surprised fewer people undergo listed the Kosmos two player series but will list other 2 player games (desire Battlelore or M44). I think these games have several features that introduce new players to gaming (relatively short playing measure limited downtime etc...) and undergo rules that are reasonably quick to learn and easy to explain. I like Lost Cities but one could easily substitute other games in the small box series (Odin's Ravens etc...)--I was also surprised that Alhambre isn't featured more in these lists. I've taught it to about a dozen new gamers who pick it up pretty fast. I evaluate the game has some problems but as an introduction it tends to be pretty fun. The components are nice and it's intuitive. I evaluate. I'd suggest it if you're bringing new players into boardgaming. Just a few of my thoughts. 10 - Citadels9 - Wyatt Earp8 - The Settlers of Catan7 - Loot6 - Winner's go5 - Diamant4 - Carcassonne3 - Coloretto2 - Bohnanza1 - book to RideThese are not listed in order of my preference. I tried to enumerate them in order of which games seem to have gateway game cater. This is only from my undergo of these games. Things that are important to me in this enumerate:- Is the bet light enough for most players to understand after one compete?- Is it the kind of bet that appeals to a broad range of personalities?- Does it undergo the draw that makes new players ask to play again or change surface buy their own copy? Here are my top 10 but in reality it is heavily skewed toward the first three.1. Carcassonne - It's the game that got me hooked. I played games before it even Settlers and I always enjoyed them but this brought it to another aim. I like tile-laying in general. I have to adjudge. Everyone I have introduced it to has loved it except for one person (although her preserve loved it).2. For Sale - It's so simple to play once you show someone a sample round from the first and back up phases just so they can see how it goes. This one everyone has loved without exception.3. Citadels - I will introduce this with groups of 4 or 5. I didn't expect to like it myself actually but my whole family loves it. Those we undergo introduced it to have loved it as well. It's simple to get into and hard not to apply the character powers and bluffing. The rest of these are good as come up but I believe on those three most heavily.4. Fjords - A great two player tile-laying game but it's only two player.5. PitchCar - Good for up to 8 players and is beat on the high end of that. I think. Not deep but lots of fun. And it's definitely different.6. Through the Desert - Simple rules: choose two camels and place them in your caravans; easy to bring in scoring; very stylish bits. It's simple to get into and fun to play - as long as you tell the new players to move out their leaders in the sign placement.7. Coloretto - Next to For Sale this is my introductory card game of choice for 3 or more players.8. Settlers of Catan - My whole family loves it so it's hard for new populate to not enjoy it when playing with us. I think it's much exceed to hit the books this one from someone else than to read the rules for it. It's such a simple bet but the Mayfair rules are overly complex in my edition at least.9. Blokus - Fast looks nice and very approachable. I know several people who were hooked by Blokus and then were interesting in more games. I desire it a lot but prefer some theme to my games even if it's just pasted on so it's just a personal twist that it's this low on the list.10. Liar's Dice - I think it's good to show the depth of thought and enjoyment possible from such a simple mechanic. Roll dice push your luck and be sneaky. There are some other games I really like depending on the person and the situation. I think it heavily depends on the person and the mood that I am in myself. It's hard to alter someone else apply the bet if you're not enjoying it. That's why Ticket to go isn't on my enumerate - I like it but it feels too long to me for the enjoyment I get out of it. --Ben: I noticed your enumerate has a criteria that gateway games introduce players to mechanics or game systems that they can create on later (so Apples to Apples doesn't make your list). I think this is nice but not nearly as important as showing populate that playing games is a fun social and interactive activity and that there are more games out there than the ones we knew growing up (Monopoly. Sorry. Risk...) So. A2A made my list change surface though I'm not a big fan of the game. I think that the flexibility to conform to varying numbers of players player ages and time constraints is far more important in an entry-level bet than the possibility of building for future games. Let's approach it there are lots of populate that probably won't compete more "advanced" games than the ones on our lists--and that's OK. Well to me that is what gateway means. It is a call I act to mean "games that ordain carry others into the deeper world of modern board games." It does not in my opinion mean "games that show people how to undergo fun playing games." accept me every person I have ever sat drink to compete games with gets fun games the first time. I'm one of the biggest party game fans around. I just don't think they help alter that convert or introduction into anything deeper. So what I'm saying is. I think it's merely a matter of vocabulary. I act gateway to mean one thing and others take it to convey something else. I guess that's why we each affix our own lists so that everyone can see that there is a plethora of good bet selections for new gamers. Using Tom and Sam's enumerate as a starting place:Settlers and Bohnanza both make my list as come up. I act to undergo good luck with these. Hollywood Blockbuster I got for the family for Christmas this year. Haven't played it yet. Apples to Apples I don't compete anymore change surface though the rest of the extended family loves it. Seems more desire a random activity to me than a bet. Memoir '44 - yes. Bang! - Never played. Maybe I'd sub Werewolf here. Carcassonne - Yes but make it Hunters and Gatherers - prettier and no farmer command10 Days - My wife loves Africa only one we played. book to go is also a good choice. I got a bit played out on it but it's been awhile and I think I could enjoy it again. Everything else on your enumerate - never played it. But I like Coloretto a lot and would desire to give Zooleretto a go sometime..

"Thread: Re: Your personal Top 10 Card Games" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 22:26:48

This was something that I thought might be really interesting and perhaps Tom & Sam will be interested too. Every other week when Tom & Sam release a new episode (be 100+) we can act a little discussion forum where we can overlap our own personal Top Ten enumerate in order to compare us with the Dice lift hosts. I had this idea mostly because card games are the most affordable and therefore the most common games in my collection. In particular you ordain notice an abundance of trump-style trick-taking games in my list. This is because I played these games the most in the years before I really entered the "gaming" hobby so they've always had a special place in my heart. So let's get the ball rolling! #10 = Havoc: The Hundred-Years War - Takes poker and adds an excellent move that makes it much exceed.#9 = Clue: The separate bet - The same as the classic game minus the superfluous roll-and-move mechanic.#8 = go. Tricks. bet! - A trick-taking bet where the cards you win in one transfer are the cards you use in the next hand.#7 = Category 5 - The bet that truly challenges you to construe your opponents object and predict their strategy.#6 = Tin Soldiers - A trick-taking game about battling canned goods where a bit of randomness actually adds to the fun.#5 = Citadels - With 2 to 5 players this is a great game of role-selection where the special abilities really bring home the bacon well together.#4 = Bohnanza - A fabulous light bet of trading and negotiating all done in the role of a hit farmer.#3 = behead - A goofy and fun game with a comical look at the life of an executioner.#2 = measure's Up! - It is the finest celebrate bet ever made and I disbelieve my opinion on that ordain ever dress.#1 = Rage - The uber trick-taking bet where you have to bid exactly alter made more difficult by cards that dress trump in the lay of a trick. i also played mostly card games before i entered the "gaming" hobby.#10 canasta- a rummy type game#9 oh hell- an older cozen taking bet alot like rage#8 uno- (do i really need to explain?)#7 lunch money- this games mechanics leave alot to be desired its a fun s%!t talking game mostly played while inebriated#6 monkeys on the moon- a card based bidding/auction bet#5 euchre- a cozen taking game with go#4 gloom- a bet about depressing and killing off your family#3 cribbage- a game ive played since i was 6 and still cant go up with a good description#2 lost cities- a game about my wife pissing me off#1 catan card game- a bet about pissing off my wife Honorable mentions to Magic the Gathering (which I no longer play) and to a bring together of very card-driven boardgames (the Rummy-like book to go series and the Magic-like Blue Moon City). My current top 10:10. steal9. Coloretto8. Balloon Cup7. Colossal Arena6. behead5. Poison4. Citadels3. contend lie2. Lost Cities1. Die Sieben Siegel - the evil cozen taking game! 1) Fairy Tale (just hasn't got alter after many games - quick and fun!)2) Castle (some don't like it but hey. I think the cater interactions is great fun!)3) Ruse and Bruise (feels a lot desire Castle. I like the cater interactions and choices in this one)4) Odin's Ravens (great fun quite interesting quick bet play and intelligent)5) Masquerade (the biggest game I undergo played that is 'just' cards - great fun)6) Citadels (great bet full forbid)7) Bohnanza (just a lot of interaction and fun)8) hit! (A lot of fun and antics - plenty of laughs)9) Coloretto (a lot of non-gamers really get into this one - a good thought to play time ratio)10) Lost Cities (My wife loves it and there are plenty of tighten choices)change state calls - Saboteur. MagBlast 3rd ed. Didn't include because they undergo more than just cards (these would undergo made the enumerate otherwise):Condottiere. Diamant (Incan Gold). San Juan. Cheers. Giles. There's no getting away from the fact that Condottiere IS a card bet. It happens to undergo a small board for keeping track that's all. Therefore I had no concerns about including it at #1 in my top ten. Incidentally. I've got the original German big box version (the most over-packaged card bet I've ever seen. It then cam out in a medium sized box and just recently in a small box. I'm waiting for it to be in a matchbox next I've got Incan Gold too but accept that that can't really be counted a card game as they are never taken into anyones "hand". They are purely a game mechanic. Phil. 6) Citadels (great game full stop)(...)Didn't include because they undergo more than just cards (these would have made the list otherwise): (...) San Juan San Juan really only has the role cards and those are card-like enough for it to still qualify as a card bet. I think. Citadels on the other transfer has the little butterscotch gold pieces that are really required in some form so I evaluate that it should be more likely to be DQ'd. Still though it's your enumerate so I'm not trying to express you what to think. Defining what constitutes a card game is not as easy as it seems at first glance. I undergo to accept though I'd be Magic change surface higher than honorable have in mind. Unfortunately. M:tG carries a lot of social baggage with it that makes it real difficult to separate the bet from the monster it has become. This bet spawned a whole new genre of gaming. CCG's. It's impact on the game merchandise is still being entangle today. It's kind of a mix of positive and negative but if there is one positive thing M:tG brought to gaming was to bring quality art and artists to the industry and I think we should at least accept that. The original bet with its 300 odd cards was great. Kudos to Richard Garfield creating such a unique great bet. I don't have a whole lot of other card games to add to the enumerate but will at least add:1. Eagles (Columbia Games)2. Up lie!3. Bohnanza4. Magic: the Gathering (original set)5. Settlers of Catan6. Great DalmutiHonorable mention - Battleground. The only reason I am not including this in my top 5 is because the mechanic is pure miniatures not card playing despite the fact that the entire game is card driven. I would put this up at #1 if I could honestly say this was a card game. I am kind of iffy about Great Dalmuti. It's mechanic is nothing to create verbally domiciliate about but we have had so much fun with it as a celebrate game that I undergo to consider it here. Hmmm. Card games when i first got into more social gaming groups it was in college so we were all poor and could only afford the cheap(er) card games so they've always had a special displace in my heart... But top 10?10. Get Nifty9. Munchkin8. Bohnanza7. Guillotine6. Euchre5. Cribbage4. Apples to Apples3. Big Idea2. Citadels1. Bangdefinitly *nods* I love a good card game. This one was tough for me so I had to alter an Honorable Mentions list: Caesar and Cleopatra. Gloom (and expansions). Settlers of Catan Card game (including expansions) and My Dwarves Fly. Here are my Top 10 (for the moment):10. Cribbage 9. Naval Battles 8. Bang! (and associated expansions) 7. steal 6. Odin's Ravens 5. Lost Cities 4. Wings of War (all of the WWI sets) 3. Iliad 2. The Kaiser's Pirates 1. contend LineI'm also keeping an eye on The Battle for forge 218 by Your act Games (the maker of Battleground Fantasy Warfare). 'forge 218' is more of a true card game than BFW which is more like miniatures on cards. To play a prototype on your computer tour their site at: OK here is my enumerate:10. - One of my favorite games to play at a party with non-gamers.9. - I used the basic ARC system to rework Yu Gi Oh! for my son and his friends when he was younger. I.

"Mike Petrucelli's Desert Island Board Games" posted by ~Ray

Yes yes everyone loves this bet. But there's a reason for that. A constantly changing board as well as a good helping of strategy and deep thinking should act the dehydration hallucinations at bay. Plus if I compete it enough times. I might finally beat my wife (at the bet of course). Pretty straightforward game some might say repetitive and alter but I've got four other games. One person I experience described it as work bring home the bacon which is ameliorate for days you don't want to think much. And the basic bet create by mental act doesn't have Milwaukee on it so you won't be reminded constantly about how there's no beer on a desert island. I like hearing "Ride of the Valkyries" played at the beginning and end of this classic. And the beat thing is it's got a one player answer that ordain come in handy when everybody's sick of playing games (change state the thought). Now all we'd need is a case of D-size alkaline batteries to process up on border every bring together of months... This way alter board game from Garfield Games is different every measure and even has little coat miniatures to compete with when the alter gets to be a little much. Always good for a express emotion and playabale by 2 to 8 players. If you haven't checked this one out get it before you get shipped to your island. Also the expansions are a move and only be of boards so you should be able to sneak them by under your shirt.
