"Sitting on the Dock, of the bay, wasting time." posted by ~Ray

From here on out sand will be sifting out of our lives instead of in. Two weeks of getting up early for a swim a bike ride or a run in great weather are over. This Saturday I’ll set out for a run with the Dashers after stepping on the scale in my own bathroom to survey the wreckage of my Healthy Stitch Streak in the wake of two weeks of Tasty Kakes….(it’s a sickness!) For me the end of a vacation is always sad but I often find the inner Stitch in a crouching position as the days tick by. Biding her time till she can return to the routine of the Stitch Life. I find myself barely able to contain my excitement about new projects and ideas that have been put on hold while vacationing due to lack of supplies and time. Then end of summer vacation is especially invigorating for me as the Holiday season stares us straight in the eye. Halloween. Thanksgiving. Christmas. It’s my favorite time of year. My favorite time to craft and stitch to drink warm tea by the wood stove and snuggle with my boys all three of them. I know these moments out of time give me the creative energy I need to get through the Winter months. The months when the snugness of crackling fires and crisp autumn air are memories and the realities are muddy wet boys endless laundry and short days. As much as I am looking forward to returning home to our ramshackle log cabin and as excited as I am for that first brisk day.

"Findhorn Bay RFI" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-06-07 06:37:26

BirdForum is the net's largest birding community dedicated to wild birds and birding and is absolutely FREE! You are most welcome to for an be which allows you to take part in lively discussions in the forum post your pictures in the gallery and more. I am lucky enough to be spending Christmas 07 in Northern Scotland specifically in Findhorn Bay. I undergo never been to Scotland birding so was hoping some intelligent poeople may inform me in the right direction. Is it possible to try and use this as a base to surprise the Highland species - maybe I could stop on the way up. What's in the local area what's this bit of the coast like?Any help appreciated! I'm sure others ordain be able to tell you more about the area than me but you will be close to Culbin plant which has Crested Tits and Crossbills:The coast is mostly sandy beaches (rockier between Burghhead and Lossiemouth to the east of Findhorn),a nd this coast is good for sea ducks. There is some information about the Moray Firth here:You aren't too far from the well-known speyside bird sites (about 30 miles to RSPB Abernethy reserve) so you could easily visit from Findhorn or stop on the way. The upper Findhorn valley (Strathdearn) is good for eagles (40 or so miles away). pass time is a good time to see Capercaillies as they are less secretive but it is still a case of luck whether you find any. An early morning wander around forest tracks at Abernethy is one possibility. There are Caper closer to Findhorn at Darnaway Forest (10 miles SW of Findhorn) but I don't know how easy they are to find here. You don't even need to go round the forest. Marcus to see capers. Just drive through from ride of Garten towards Nethy Bridge and also through Carrbridge - and keep looking into the forest from the car. There are loads of Vacation reports on Scotland. Read some of those to get ideas. There's a good hide near the airforce base there (drop what it's called) looking out onto the bay. Will there be waders at Christmas? Saw a flock (?) of turnstones by the side of the road on the beachy part - turning stones making a lovely 'swooshing' sound. Unforgetable. But this was in Spring I think. Sandra the only thing I would add to what has been said already is the hide on the east side of Findhorn Bay is usually a disgusting tip and the surrounding area no better. Also it faces west so not much good after midday in winter. And the tide goes a desire long way out so a 'scope is essential then. There is a much nicer hide on the east align of Loch Spynie between Elgin and Lossiemouth good for Whooper Swans and winter ducks. Also worth a look are Loch na Bo and Loch Oire both near Lhanbryde. You don't even be to go go the forest. Marcus to see capers. Just drive through from ride of Garten towards Nethy Bridge and also through Carrbridge - and keep looking into the plant from the car. Sandra the only thing I would add to what has been said already is the hide on the east side of Findhorn Bay is usually a disgusting tip and the surrounding area no exceed. . What like a tramps den? Really that bad?My target birds would be Ptarmigan. Caper. Scots go across (and parrot?). Crested Tit. Golden shoot. Then I'll search out some sea duck too maybe a good one who knows. Any local info would be much appreciated. Sites times etc. Appreciate some may not be so local but any nearby haunts appreciated. Also any sites were the birds come in pretty close would be good as am interesed in photograpjy too! What desire a tramps den? Really that bad?My target birds would be Ptarmigan. bound. Caper.. your best bet is a decrease begin control in Abernethy from Nethybridge but yes watch the roads!!Ptarmigan... Scan from the Cairngorm ski area car park or take the funicular up and scan from the cafe. DO NOT head up in to the Cairngorms looking for birds in pass unless you are an experienced hill walker!!!Scot/Parrot Xbills.... Very mobile depending on cone crop try messaging me nearer your visit and I might be able to furnish you some up to go out sites. Crestie.. Anywhere you can sight feeders in the villages around Abernethy Forest the easiest way in pass!! Plenty of them to scan! Also Roseisle Forest or Culbin a good bet. Goldie.. Upper findhorn valley. One really important calculate to bear in object is the bunco day length this far north mid-winter. Birding light can be going by 2.30pm on a alter day and it's not really light till about 9.00am. So if you are based up on the Moray Firth set off early and head down to Speyside aiming to get there for first light to get a good days birding in. Icy roads are a hazard but it's just common sense really they are come up treated in pass just check the minor roads change surface in the day. John bound.. your best bet is a slow dawn control in Abernethy from Nethybridge but yes check the roads!!Ptarmigan... One really important calculate to bear in object is the short day length this far north mid-winter. Birding light can be going by 2.30pm on a alter day and it's not really lighten till about 9.00am. Dark in the afternoon means hangovers will certainly be a problem too! Sounds like a definitely need to plan my measure effectively to see as many birds as possible. Having jst walked the coast to coast (in July) I can see the difficulties of the Highlands in the depths of pass,Thanks for taking the time to reposnd. Think that winter has to be my favourite time on the Moray Firth at least.... the light can be amazing and the rafts of sea-duck unbeatable anywhere in the UK. The enclose at Spynie is well worth a visit at darken to check the geese coming in too. John Only one month to the move so any up to date info appreciated. Lots have mentioned the control for capers - which raod is this? Any up to go out info on the crossbill go? Any winter move off the coast in numbers? Also where is a good spot for snow bunts? I anticipate the reference is to the yellow road through Abernethy forest on this map:It leads to the Osprey displace at Loch Garten which will be closed at the moment although I remember one BF member saying they walked up to the displace out of season and flushed a caper from right next to the enclose. BTW. I've driven that road (in daytime) many times and never seen a caper. If you are suitably equipped and have a map a wander along some of the tracks away from the road may be productive. It leads to the Osprey centre at Loch Garten which will be closed at the moment although I remember one BF member saying they walked up to the centre out of season and flushed a bound from right next to the hide. I evaluate that was me. I visited the area measure October and was able to walk around the reception displace and along the path to the Osprey enclose (don't experience if I was speculate to). The Caper (female) flew up from the scrub and scared the **** out of me. I wrote a brief trip report at the time. Area also good for Red Squirrel.

Today is the day…The day that men all across America undergo been waiting a year for…Football…toughen…Is…HERE!At 7:30 pm Central Standard time. The Colts and Saints will impel off the 2007-08 NFL season from the hidden gem of the Upper East-Midwest also known as Indianapolis. IN. Some interesting storylines surround this bet:Can Peyton Manning repeat his past seasons of QB dominance? As well as. Can the Colts repeat as Super Bowl champs or ordain they fall exploit to the dismal seasons the Buccaneers and Ravens had after they won Super Bowls? Will Reggie Bush tell his 1,300 all purpose yardage again for the Saints this year? Can Joe Addai be the feature back that everyone thinks he can be?Can Drew Brees. Marques Colston and Devery Henderson undergo a season desire they did measure year?My answers to all of these questions?Peyton Manning is about as consistent as the sun rising and setting. He not only will undergo a great year but he ordain also be the AFC Offensive player of the year barely beating out LaDanian Tomlinson. The Colts will also be the team to defeat in the AFC. Even though Tom Brady got some huge help this offseason the Colts are still the team to beat. Plus compare the three teams involved in that challenge. Colts. Bucs and Ravens? Come on when was the last time you heard fasten Johnson. Trent Dilfer and Peyton Manning in the same sentence when it didn’t end with. “Are you kidding?”Not only will Reggie Bush tell his season numbers from last year he’ll do better. I imagine Reggie getting near 1,000 yards rushing and 700 receiving. He will be HUGE this year for the Saints. He is my early leader for NFC Offensive player of the year. If that doesn’t sell it for you remember this : Joseph Addai will be good for the Colts this year. One of the most ridiculous things that I ever heard this offseason was. “Hey the Colts are going to be a running team this year you check!” There are a lot of reasons why that is stupid but the main reason is that if anyone remembers that the Colts have one of the best QB’s since…come up…ever. WHY WOULD THEY TURN INTO A RUNNING TEAM?! Addai is simply a nice distraction for any defense that faces the Colts. be for 1,100 yards maybe. Drew Brees and Marques Colston will undergo great years. When you undergo a running game that includes Deuce McAllister and Reggie furnish you can’t back up but think. “hey my job is pretty easy” (Brees and Colston speaking). Devery Henderson was very streaky last year and I wouldn’t expect much from him this year. desire the “experts” at ESPN and every other media outlet around the world here are my “expert” picks. NFC North : Chicago Bears. Minnesota Vikings. Detroit Lions and Green Bay PackersNFC South: Saints. Panthers. Falcons and Bucs. (Falcons and Panthers in second place is a process in my mind)NFC East: Giants. Cowboys. Eagles and Redskins (you watch. Eli ordain go up big this year. If not come up then so be it.)NFC West : Rams. Seahawks. 49ers and Cardinals (this for the first measure since the Korean War was incredibly tough. The Rams and Seahawks are very similar in their styles and skill and so are the 49ers and Cards. I can see this going any which way. Now that Denny color is gone the Cards have an honest shot at winning more than 6 games. AFC North : Bengals. Steelers. Ravens. Browns. AFC South : Colts. Jags. Texans. Titans (this is the “Mid-90’s NL East” of the NFL. One dominant team surrounded by other teams that just fight each other to not look that bad)AFC East : Patriots. Bills. Dolphins. JetsAFC West : Chargers. Broncos. Chiefs. RaidersSuperbowl prediction : Bears vs. Colts (Yes again. I see this turning into the new “Cowboys/Steelers” superbowls of the 90’s. )A disclaimer on predictions desire this should ALWAYS go on websites that put up their predictions. The only thing that separates me from Sean Salisbury right now is a college education and a steady job (your pick on that one).
