The author of Ecclesiastes was a very wise man and never more so than when he intoned: "And further by these my son be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh." (King James Version). Joyce Carol Oates seems to have written the preponderance of novels short stores crime fiction horror tales poetry drama essays and literary criticism since. I don't know about the time Charlemagne came to power. Oh and (shiver!) children's books. Really. Joyce Carol Oates writes so much -- How much does she write. Chauncey? -- no really. Joyce Carol Oates writes so much she could stop global warming just by taking a vacation. By my count and I may have nodded off during the tally. Joyce Carol Oates has published since 1963 something like 88 or 89 novels novellas and short story collections. That is to say fiction for adults. Most Americans read a book a year or less so that's more than a lifetime of reading for most of us. Include the other categories and the number of volumes published by this one person is well over 120 which means only yogurt-eating peasants in the Caucasus Mountains have lifespans sufficient to read them all. Now I'll concede Joyce Carol Oates is a bit of a genius. Indeed for most of the 1990s I went around telling all and sundrythat she was America's greatest living writer deserving of the Nobel Prize. an entirely superfluous fictional account of Marilyn Monroe's sad life. Joyce Carol Oates for all her skill and dark dark imagination fell into that pitfall awaiting all excessively prolific authors. Now to my utter amazement I have on my desk a book with the absurd title Aw come on. Joyce Carol Oates. Give a poor book reviewer a break! Clearly all you do is write. When would you have had the time to keep a journal? Further since all you do is write what could you have possibly had to write in your journal about? Hmmm.. thumbing at random because I sure as Hades ain't gonna read this sucker ah yes chosen entirely by chance: "... Can one 'enjoy' moderate fame and also retain a private life?" Ah and here on the facing page: "At the age of forty one should attempt a complete re-evalution of one's life. Perhaps." Yeah well that must have kept Joyce Carol Oates occupied at least 30 seconds since YOU DON'T HAVE A LIFE. I don't care how big your genius may be. Joyce Carol Oates you can't depend on it for your entire artistic impulse. You have to have some life experience to feed into the machine. Otherwise what you're doing with all that writing is not self-expression it's hypergraphia. Now a spry and relentless 69. Joyce Carol Oates will probably produce at the present rate well in excess of 200 volumes of all kinds of books before she passes from this vail of tears. So please. "If she?d have stayed longer, there?sa good chance we?d have gone ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-25 01:17:50

We had my mom’s b-day dinner Saturday at my house. After cleaning all day Friday. I got up early Saturday and cooked a bunch of food (pot roast home made mac and cheese salad fruit salad garlic bread and more). My brother sister her boyfriend and my crew (minus Amber who had duty all pass) all gathered to celebrate my mother’s 66th year on this earth. You never really know what my mom is going to say or how she is going to behave which means family get togethers are entertaining. She’s a brilliant artist and a very kind woman but she definitely lives in her own world. Something my brothers and sister and I learned to accept desire ago. It’s hard to give examples of what I mean. During the meal. I asked her “So mom how has your birthday been so far? What did you do today?” And she answers “I vacuumed the floor.” But she doesn’t say it with an attitude. And she’s not trying to be funny. She responds to the question with this earnest sincerity desire all year long all she has been waiting to do was vacuum her floor. Then on her 66th birthday praise the Lord. You find yourself wanting to applaud the fact that she vacuumed. You’re so happy that she’s happy about that. After the meal we gathered in the living room so she could open her presents. We got her a gift separate some flowers and some items from Matsuya Oriental Market. But before we could give the presents to her she stood up in the middle of the room and announced that instead of her birthday it was going to be Christmas and she had presents for everyone. Then she started handing out these presents she’d brought in from her car. She made us all open our gifts first. AND she read the outloud to everyone and had made them all copies of it to take home. After all that she finally opened her gifts which she seemed to really like. It was a wonderful day. It was good to be with my family. Good to celebrate my mom. And good to have a very large bottle of merlot open during most of it. The only thing missing was my girl Amber and my older brother Duffy. Other than that it was a wonderful Christmas … er … birthday. "Update - September 19 - Do They Know It's Christmas?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-06-07 06:38:16

Well it's Christmas Day on Coronation Street and there isn't much to report. The Platts and the Websters sat down together for a change intensity dinner. The Grimshaws ate chocolate and watched videos and The Macdonalds served drinks down at the pub. Everyone was in good encourage and listened intently to Ken Barlow who paused to remember those they lost this year before reminding everyone listening to embrace their families and friends and live with the true spirit of Christmas in their hearts every day of the year. Ken then turned to the camera raised a glass and said. "From all of us at Coronation Street may you have the happiest of Christmases and the very best in the new year."... What are you kidding me? It's Coronation Street. As if the day is going to pass quietly. They must come to dread the holidays by now. Let's mouth shall we?What Child Is This? It's Christmas morning or as David Platt calls it. "Birthmas." She gives Bethany her present which Sarah says Bethany loved. David mentions that he was going to get her a new voicebox. Sarah takes offense and says she's just contented."Sarah," David says. "Trappist monks evaluate she's quiet." He then adds that it would be really lame if someone gave him racing gloves to go with his beater in the driveway. Sarah looks down at her show looking guilty. David hands Gail her enable. It looks like Ivy Tilsley's diary. When she opens it it's just a novel. The title was "Mourning Dakota" but I was hoping it would be "Hard Grinding" by Mel Hutchwright. Later. Sally and Kevin are there and she and Gail are trying to cause if the chicken is cooked. David asks if Gail ever thought about having him induced early when she was carrying him."Of cover not," says Gail."Do you remember the day or were you all fuzzed out on pills?" he then asks."I remember it very well and your father and I were very happy."Bill and Audrey arrive and Bill wishes a happy Christmas to all and sundry. Audrey wishes David a happy birthday and hands him a present. David tells his grandmother she smells very nice."Oh convey you David." she replies."Gin and tonic ain't it?" he asks. Later. Gail. Bill. Audrey. Sally. Kevin. David. Sarah-Lou. Bethany. Rosie and Sophie are all wearing cover hats and tucking into their Christmas meal. Everyone is laughing even as it's scandalously revealed that Sally's attempt to make a pudding went pear-shaped and she ended up buying one from a hold on after all. David gives Gail a new present asking her to open it alter there. She does and finds it's an old book."It's Ivy Tilsley's diary," David says prompting an exchange of looks between Rosie and Sophie."I didn't experience she could create verbally," Kevin jokes. David pushes the issue and tells his mother that there's good reading in there and she should read it right now. Sensing her son has a point to make she quietly refuses and says she'll construe it later. David pulls it from her inform out all the things she's written like Ida Clough's body odour and Vera's nasty coats. Everyone is laughing along and David then reads the following passage: "I honestly do not know how the Good Lord has seen me through today's trial. Gail went for an abortion. If it weren't for Martin Platt that innocent little child inside her would be dead now" The table goes silent. David asks Gail if she remembers the date when she went to end him. Then he asks if anyone wants more sprouts. Sarah asks why David treats his mum this way and calls him a headcase before excusing herself from the table. Gail tells David that he was wanted as he is here now. Sally and Audrey try to change the subject by talking about how come up the chicken turned out. Audrey and Bill ask David why he has to do that to his mum when she is doing the best she can. Kevin says he remembers "Poison Ivy" and doesn't think it happened the way she wrote it. Everyone seemed happy to him. Rosie calls David a loser and Audrey agrees saying that he brings this cram on himself. Sally announces that the rum pudding will be ready in ten minutes. account says he's looking forward to it as they don't get pudding like that in Germany. (Ah but it's the ). Wow. I don't think this day can get any worse. The doorbell rings. Gail goes to see who's there and it's... Maureen. You know. Maureen Webster. Bill's wife. Bill is busy lecturing David on his value when Maureen comes in yelling "Surprise!" He lets go of Audrey's hand as Maureen drops herself on his lap telling him how much she missed him. Maureen asks about some of the old crowd like ex-husband Fred (dead) and Martin Platt (divorced Gail had an affair with a minor moved to Liverpool). David is thoroughly enjoying seeing the adults squirm like this. Bill then announces he needs to stretch his legs. He is quickly followed by Kevin then Sally. When they're outside. Kevin asks. "So. Baldric. What's the cunning plan?" Bill tells Kevin to pretend he has an emergency label. Bill will go with Kevin so he can fetch his things at Audrey's. They go back inside and begin enacting their Christmas panto when David starts doing the slow clap."Oscars all around!" he says. Maureen asks what he means. He tells her that Bill has been a dirty dog. He then asks Bill whee ordain he sleep tonight? Kevin's? Or Maureen's? He then lights the rum-soaked dumpling. Maureen jumps up knocking it over onto the floor. Everyone scrambles to put it out. Best! Christmas! Ever! Here We go A-WassailingSean brings giant chocolate bars to the Grimshaws where they settle in for their own Christmas day. He and Violet call a Christmas truce. The Barlows are going for Christmas dinner with the seniors. Tracy seems to be missing. Steve is supposed to be with Amy today but Liz and Fern keep retiring upstairs to Yes loved the intro to the summary!Wow. Sophie's little psychic hotline storyline has taken a rather psyhco turn. David is evil evil evil. I half expected Gail to tell him she was beginning to regret Martin had been so persuasive all those years ago. Maureen's sudden arrival did make it crystal clear though how poorly all the adults have been behaving as come up. I don't evaluate Bethany was there for Christmas dinner. She was worn out by all the 'hysteria' of the gift opening and had to go down for a nap. Really why don't they just get a sack of potatoes to compete her? David's line about Trappist monks was priceless. Perhaps it was a little nod from the producers to the audience saying 'yes we know this poor child has no acting ability feature with us while we find a replacement'. David is an awful turd isn't he? Although I did apply watching it. It was the same kind of excite I used to get from JR Ewing!I also loved that the writers winked at us about Bethany. I mean it's Christmas and neither she nor Amy had the slightest reaction to presents! Amy's only 2 or 3 but there's no excuse for Beth... Anyone else notice that David's new haircut is a reject from the go of Seagulls? (I just dated myself didn't I?)Michigander Fan Westcoast,Oh yes. Dallas was my inaugural soap. Then came General Hospital. By the time the "Dream Season" came the show was on life support. But didn't you like watching JR be rotten! I did. This is why I enjoy Tracy. David. Blanche and even Norris. These are people I would HATE in MY life but on a TV show they are really fun. The funny thing about Dallas is that my parents had a check on how much TV we could check but I was allowed to check whatever I wanted. So I was watching Dallas as a wee sprite!MF Something has been bothering me lately namely that the writers have been giving us the impression that Martin has all but abandoned David. I know that a lot of it is simply the stupid comments of a twisted teenager (e g. "he's moved on to his new improved family") but Gail and Sarah never seem to contend or be with these statements. And given all the troubles with David it seems really odd that we don't see Gail at least contemplating calling up Martin to discuss the situation (especially since she routinely relied on his advice and assistance with David before he left town). She goes to parenting classes but she doesn't seek any help from the create?I know that the actor is gone from the show but the show refers to other written-off characters all the measure. So Martin's mere absence from the street doesn't demand the writers to make it as though he never sees or calls his son. Maybe the writers be to set more of a groundwork for David being such a nasty piece of bring home the bacon (disappear father). But that just strikes me as lazy writing (a long-time character suddently acting out of character simply to move ahead a plot line). It's odd. Skeezix I agree. Skeezix. We could at least see David opening a birthmas show from his dad or talking to him on the phone. On the other transfer we don't see Todd phoning his mom Christmas morning nor cut calling his. It's like the writers evaluate. 'out of sight out of object' or 'let's not clutter up the story with too many old characters'. Heck one engrave hasn't even been written out of the plan he's simply gone missing in challenge. Where was Adam last night when everyone was visiting Amy and then heading out to eat with the old fogies? I don't think he was change surface mentioned. Loved this episode and loved the update. The Corrie direct does humour so well. Regarding the "David reads Ivy's diary" storyline. I evaluate that was created to push David over to the dark side. Once Gail got him the car he seemed almost happy; all the anger and hostility had simmered down. Then he reads those fateful words about Gail's almost abortion and all the hurt and anger comes rushing approve. He's definitely mad at the world and feels very let down by his parents -- mostly Martin. I think for going off with his "new improved family." I think he feels very abandoned by his dad (but I'm not excusing any of his actions -- just commenting on where they stem from). Oh and I loved Dallas too. JR had the dastardly grin down pat! I agree with all the Martin and David comments. It makes no comprehend and I wondered the same thing. There have been a bring together things said to reassure david that martin still cares but not enough and Martin did just cease. Strange because his character never came off like that. OK. Adam Barlow got totally forgotten about by the writers. But. I evaluate they they never really knew what to do with him. You would think that he and Joanne could really hot it up on the street but there has been nothing.

"Annoying jerks" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:26:46

My in-laws think that they rule the world. inspect and inform: Holidays. I dread them anymore because of these people. This is how most pan out. Thanksgiving-We get a call about a week before the actual day. "What are you guys doing?" Cue the sh!t fits if we've actually planned something with my family or haven't already cleared the whole holiday for whenever they finally decide to get around to planning something. I end up bringing two or three things. SIL brings two or three nasty things (married to husband's brother) and the parents-in-law MAY spring for a small sickly and undercooked turkey. Then we sit at the table and comprehend to them talk about how good the turkey was at whatever other dinner they attended that we were not invited to. Apparently we aren't good enough to reach brining or much less salt pepper and buttering the bird. The food is horrible and the affiliate is change surface worse. Everyone gobbles up whatever it is I carry and then complain about how fattening it was later. Christmas-Usually this time around we get a call a whole week and a half prior to the holiday! Only this measure instead of asking "What are you guys doing?" they just automatically assume that we will be speeding to their home our first available come about and staying until past Christmas. Nevermind the fact that we would desire to go away our own traditions or spend measure together in our own domiciliate. Nope. We have to come there to shower these wealthy populate with gifts that they can then turn their noses up at and complain about later. Also we open lousy cheap gifts from the local stop and obtain that were obviously purchased last minute and of the "bottom of the barrel" variety. Oh yeah and I am not allowed to go to any "family" events desire cutting drink the Christmas tree. No they wait until I'm busy or not around to do that because after all my presence would just RUIN their whole holiday experience!Easter-More lousy undercooked food only this time they don't bother calling us at all. We usually hear about this one through husband's siblings.. who did get invited. I anticipate since they've all decided that I'm a heathen. I must not get together Easter so I'm not included. Just like Christmas. No more. We're not doing this egest anymore. I'm done with them and their BS. If they want to indulge in mediocrity forever let them. I'm not going to pay the be of my life not having a real "family" with my preserve and our future children because of their inability to let go.
